On May 27 (Memorial Day), The Neighborhood House welcomed about 400 guests who had gathered from across MDI for the annual Community Cookout. Numerous members of the Board of Directors turned out to lend a hand throughout the day, helping with everything from seeing up underneath the tent to taking orders and flipping burgers.

The Memorial Day celebrations kicked off with the parade down Main Street, featuring marching bands from both the MDI High School and Mt. Desert Elementary. Also on hand were the organizers fo the parade, American Legion Post 103, local Police, Fire, and Ambulance Service vehicles, and of course, a contingent from The Neighborhood House.

As the parade made its way to the harbor, a ceremony was held to honor those brave individuals who sacrificed their lives to protect our freedoms and preserve our ability to gather as a community and celebrate on days just like this. From there, most of the crowd made their way to the cookout. The long lines formed quickly, but the volunteer “grill masters” kept it moving and made sure nobody left hungry.

Special thanks to the tremendous group of generous event sponsors who made the Community Cookout possible: Thomas W. Wallace Construction, S.R. Tracy Paint Shop, Northeast Plumbing & Heating, and Main Street Variety.
