Fitness Classes Growing Stronger

As the number of leaves hitting the ground continues to grow, so too is our slate of fitness offerings. In addition to Yoga for Skillful Living with Richard Parker every Thursday and Sunday, instructor Andrea Lepcio will begin offering several classes starting November 1. Below is a description of each of those classes. Starting in November, we’ll implement “Online Registration” for all classes with the exception of Active Older Adults. We’ll have the registration links up on our Fitness Classes page within the next couple of weeks.

Yoga for Skillful Living w/ Richard Parker Thu/Sun @ 8am

$10/class | Register Online (proceeds benefit Neighborhood House)

This moderate class (you can choose to raise or lower the intensity) is designed with the foundational poses that make up a well-rounded asana practice. Focus is placed on safe and effective alignment (without hands on adjustments) rather than striving for idealized versions of poses. Each class addresses balance, core strength, the six motions of the spine, and those parts of the body that remain short and compressed by habitual patterns and gravity. I follow the same pattern in every class but with a different sequence each time. The final 8 minutes are devoted to meditation/savasana, with a wide variety of optional meditation techniques. Many of my students have been practicing for years, and there are often those new to asana and Yoga. All are welcome

For beginners and more experienced yogis, this is an inspiring morning practice. Each week is themed by body part and function to allow for deeper exploration. We will flow through sun salutations, standing poses, seated poses, balance, backbend and twisted poses moving on our breath. Andrea will offer modifications to make a pose easier or more challenging. The practice will nurture strength, stamina, balance and a sense of wellbeing.

Tai Chi w/ Andrea Lepcio Mon @ 10:45am

Tai Chi is a slow-moving exercise designed to build strength, improve balance, increase range of motion, and integrate mind and body. We move slowly and deliberately through a series of forms. Each week we will learn new movements and gradually build our vocabulary of forms. The pace of learning will be patient and gentle. This class includes learning how to prevent falling. Tai Chi is a calm, mindful practice that is safe for all. If you wish, you may practice in a chair.

Past the age of 30, without intervention, we lose muscle mass and tone. The good news is, you can take action to reverse this trend. With the use of free weights, machines and resistance bands, we’ll learn exercises for each of the major muscles in our bodies. A fun, educational and effective class to counteract the aging process.
