An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Between being fully enthralled in cold and flu season and the recent emergence of Covid-19, it is extra important to do our best to limit the potential spread of germs. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps all of us can easily take to do just that.

Here’s how we’re doing our part at The Neighborhood House:

1.     There’s nothing we love more than an excuse for the community to gather and celebrate. We want everyone to join us for these get togethers, but if you’re under the weather or worried about your ability to fight off illness, we urge you to stay at home. Groups like the CDC provide tips and guidelines for those worried about becoming ill. Staying home until you are symptom free is the best practice, but the good news is we have lots of fun events throughout the year and will look forward to you rejoining us very soon!

2.     Keeping things clean goes a long way towards limiting the spread of germs. This includes surfaces such as tables and countertops. Before any gathering we make sure these items get a good wipe down with a disinfectant. If you want to do the same in your own home you can find some helpful tips from the EPA here.

3.     Studies show even a moderate level of physical activity can help boost the immune system. It’s important to be active, but it’s also important to do so in a healthy environment. That’s why we ask that all gym members use the provided disinfectant wipes to completely wipe down equipment after use, paying special attention to areas such as handles, grips, and touch screens. Furthermore, if you’re not feeling well you have our permission to take some days off from workouts—it’ll be our secret! In addition to these simple measures, staff members also frequently clean all of the equipment surfaces with a special air ionizer designed to destroy any lingering bacteria.

4.     By far the easiest and most efficient way to keep from spreading germs is to frequently wash your hands. How easy is that?! To make it even more of a no-brainer, at The Neighborhood House we have easily accessible sinks with adjacent soap dispensers on the main floor and lower level as well as in the multipurpose Aunt Hibou Room and kitchen. Additionally, wall mounted hand-sanitizer dispensers can be found in various spots including right outside our main office and in the lower level gym.
